Please Don’t Unplug.

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

You turn on the news, and see more insanity every day. You get a sick pit in your stomach then experience an overwhelming urge to change the channel or you force yourself to think about something else.

Higher taxes… Increased government spending… More entitlements… and no explanation of how we’re going to pay for it.

I feel your pain, but it is imperative that we do not give in to the urge to unplug. Even though it may seem easier at times, the disengagement of the masses is what has led us to this critical point in history. Through our lack of involvement in the process, we have allowed the government to invade almost every aspect of our lives.

With work and family and friends and church, we all have responsibilities that monopolize our time. We worry about whether or not the kids got enough vegetables at dinner. We worry about our businesses or even about the general state of the economy. With all of these committments, who has time to be an activist?

John Hancock

Our situation seems unique to us in the moment, but we fail to realize that this is the essence of the human condition. Since the beginning of time, people have struggled under the same weight of responsibility, if not more so. John Hancock and the other founders of this nation experienced the same exact concerns. They had commitments that required their time and attention. Hancock had a family to look after and a job to do, but somehow he resolved that the liberty of his fellow countrymen depended on his personal involvement and found the strength to risk it all. He faced the greatest empire on Earth with no guarantee of success, and while failure meant certain death for himself and his allies, he summoned the courage to fight, and signed the Declaration of Independence in huge bold strokes.

Be comforted! Our struggle is not so severe, and our enemy is not so great. We have a model for success that has flourished for over 200 years.
